William Wordsworth's Preface to Lyrical Ballads announced an extraordinary experiment in poetics. While it shared many of the same goals as Classical poetics, the focus on what the poet does artistically with language to create an effect on the reader gives way to a religious project of getting to the spirit of things.
The Romantic project is the art to which the newfound "spiritual sciences" established in Germany will correspond. While the poetics are utterly novel, the rhetoric used suggests a return to nature, to the primal origins of all language in 'feeling.'
The humanities have never been the same.
