In this video, Rupert reminds us that the essence of meditation is to see through the relentless distractions of the content of our experience – thoughts, sensations, perceptions, feelings and so on – in order to see and know our self clearly.
He says: ‘Almost all our troubles and difficulties stem from the fact that we have forgotten or overlooked our self. We don’t really forget our self, at least not completely, but our sense of our self is so mixed with the content of experience, that we do not see our self clearly.
‘Our essential being is simply what we refer to when we say “I am”, and it is present in the midst of all experience. All that is necessary is to separate our self from everything that is not essential to us. What remains is naked, self-aware being. And having noticed our self as that, we remain as that.
‘To begin with, returning to or remembering our self may seem to require effort. But in time we realise that being our self, which means simply being, is what we are. Everything else – thinking, breathing, walking, talking, and so on – require at least a degree of effort. But simply being is the only experience, if we can refer to it as an experience, that requires absolutely no effort whatsoever. It is what we are, not what we do.’
