Both Reduction and Yau5 are great methods with similar potential on 5x5. Differences listed below:
Reduction (centers - edges - 3x3):
- easy to do color neutral centers
- much faster centers
- is arguably better than yau5 on cubes 6x6 and up
Yau5 (centers & cross - edges - 3x3):
- similar to 4x4 yau method
- easier look ahead during edge pairing
- avoids turning the cube upside down
- much faster 3x3 stage
- restricted to 2 cross colors unless you are color neutral for 3x3
