Dogs 101 - RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK - Top Dog Facts About the RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a hunting dog categorized in the hound group, developed by European settlers in South Africa and then Rhodesia. The ‘Ridgeback’ in its name is a reference to a distinctive feature of the breed – a narrow strip, or ridge, of hair that grows on its back in the forward direction. Its origins can be traced to the dogs of a variety of breeds brought to South Africa by the Boers in the 16th and 17th centuries. To adapt to the special climate and terrain in this new land, these dogs were crossed with the semi-domesticated hunting dogs used by the local Khoikhoi tribe. In the 1870s, some of these dogs were introduced into Rhodesia, or modern-day Zimbabwe, where they were found excellent companions in the sport of hunting lions. By the early 1900s, there were several types of these ridged African ‘lion dogs’ being bred, and a breed standard was drawn up in the 1920s to chalk out the most desirable traits and create a foundation for the modern Rhodesian Ridgeback. It was soon introduced to England and the US, where its strong hunting abilities won it many admirers.

The average height of the adult male Rhodesian Ridgeback is 25 to 27 inches, with weight around 85 pounds. The female generally stands at 24 to 26 inches, and weighs around 70 pounds. It is a lean, muscular dog, slightly longer than tall. The short glossy coat is built for working in hot climates. The ridge of hair, which is about 2 inches wide at its widest point, has to be clearly defined, tapering and symmetrical, starting just behind the shoulders and continuing to the hips. The standard coat color includes different shades from red wheaten to light wheaten. Flat skull, slightly broad between the ears; eyes set moderately apart, blending with the coat color; and ears set rather high, of medium size are some other typical features.
Grooming:The Rhodesian Ridgeback requires minimal coat care. A weekly brush to remove dead hair and an occasional bath should be enough. Brushing of teeth, cleaning of ears and trimming of nails has to be regular.
Temperament:This is a loyal, intelligent and sensitive breed, which gets affected by any kind of harsh treatment. Its innate protective instincts make it very good with children, though some dogs might be too boisterous for young kids. Its aloofness with strangers also makes it a good guard dog. It is aggressive towards other dogs and pets, but can be trained to be more social.
Training:The Rhodesian Ridgeback is an intelligent breed and can be trained easily for hunting, for agility trials or to perform tricks. Considering its domineering personality, early obedience training through firm, but gentle means is highly recommended. It is a very active breed, loves the outdoors and requires a long walk or an exhausting game to keep it from turning destructive.
Health:The life expectancy of the breed is 10 to 13 years. Though a generally healthy breed, thyroid problems are seen particularly commonly among these dogs. This can cause issues like weight gain and hair loss, but the condition can be controlled by inexpensive medication. Another common disorder is dermoid sinus, a neural-tube defect. Congenital heart disorder, degenerative myelopathy, deafness and elbow dysplasia are also seen.
Bred to hunt lions, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a unique combination of power and protectiveness. This intelligent and independent dog can be a wonderful companion for adults and kids alike, but is best suited for experienced and active dog owners.
