During his lifetime he wrote many unorthodoxical poems, which he himself believed were unacceptable to his society. But John Donne was a bold and rebellious poet, who dared to write at least, though was not confident enough to circulate his poems publically.
This poem is a romantic poem, in which the poet expresses his reaction to first love or his emotions at falling in love for the first time.
