We (more specifically, I) really want to get a family milk cow for our dairy needs. The dexter breed, being a really good homestead-scale breed, is the type of milk cow for which we were looking. They are small, docile, easy to handle, and have a cream quality second only to a Jersey. We've taken on a lot in 2017 so we didn't think getting a cow was necessarily something we'd do this year.
Our friend Katie is a registered Dexter breeder but she is liquidating her herd to focus on her Jersey milk/cheese operation. Katie is the rare breeder that is raising her animals to our standards. Once her Dexters are gone, it would be difficult to find another breeder than has our standards and wants to see an experienced milk cow at a discounted price. This might be our only opportunity...
