Here, within the boundaries of Zakopane, is a forested fragment of Tatra National Park. For several years it has been visited by red deer, which can access it from the much larger forested areas of the Park nearby. Red deer are related to their smaller cousins, roe deer. These species are sometimes confused, with some people thinking that roe deer is a female red deer. But red deer are considerably larger: a female (doe) weights 80-120 kg, and a male (bull) can weight up to 200 kg. Roe deer weight only 18-25 kg. Currently, 200-300 red deer are estimated to live in Tatra National Park. The presence of red deer within the city limits - a developed area so close to the park - has consequences. Some animals are injured while trying to jump over fences. Their presence on the roads can lead to serious collisions with cars. When frightened, these wild animals can become aggressive toward humans. There have even been instances of red deer poaching in Zakopane.
