These are the deadliest substance on earth.
Did you know that drinking too much water in one sitting can be fatal? Have you ever heard why our pet dogs should not eat chocolates?
Lethal dose 50 or LD50 is the amount of a substance that is capable of killing 50 percent of the tested animal population within a certain period. LD50 is also called the median lethal dose. Toxic agents include poison, pathogens, or radiation. It is used to measure the general indicator of a substance’s intense toxicity. The lower the LD50, the more toxic the substance.
Although LD50 is commonly used in toxicology, there are limitations. The measure of LD50 is somewhat unreliable and results may greatly vary because of differences in testing procedures and the animals used. A huge disclaimer is that comparing substances by LD50 can be misleading due to differences in effective dosage (ED50). Moreover, LD50 can vary between species as well. Some substances may be safe for rats and mice but extremely toxic to humans, and vice versa. For example, some substances are toxic to dogs and cats like chocolates but harmless to humans.
