The commonly held belief that Christopher Columbus was the first European to discover America is not entirely accurate. In fact, there is evidence to suggest that a Norse explorer named Leif Erikson beat Columbus to the punch by several centuries.

According to the Icelandic Sagas, a collection of medieval texts that tell the history of the Vikings, Leif Erikson was born in Iceland around 970 AD. His father, Erik the Red, had established a settlement in Greenland around 982 AD, and Leif eventually joined him there. In around 1000 AD, Leif set sail from Greenland with a crew of 35 men and landed on the coast of what is now known as Canada, specifically in the area that is now called Newfoundland.

Leif and his crew spent several years exploring the coast of North America, establishing a settlement at what is now called Vinland (also known as Winland) and possibly even reaching as far south as New England. The Vikings who sailed with Leif called this new land “Vinland” because of the abundance of wild grapes they found there.

While Columbus is often credited with the “discovery” of America, it’s important to note that he did not explore the interior of the continent or make any significant contact with the indigenous peoples. In contrast, Leif Erikson and his crew spent several years exploring the coast of North America and establishing a settlement, which suggests a much more extensive and thorough exploration of the continent.

So, while Columbus may have been the first European to reach the Americas since the Vikings, it’s clear that Leif Erikson and his crew were the first Europeans to actually explore and settle the continent.
