These are 2 phrases you should use every time you check into a hotel
They use techniques from former hostage negotiator Chris Voss.
And in combination with a smile and the right tone of voice, you stand a good chance at a free upgrade.
Step 1
You're going to ask for an upgrade using a no-oriented question.
Here's the question:
“Would it be out of line to ask if a complimentary upgrade is available?”
People feel safe and secure saying no. That's what you want here, and they'll usually say "no, not at all. I can take a look for you".
99% of the time, the next thing they'll ask is if you're a loyalty member of the hotel.
If you are, great. Say yes and you stand a good chance of getting the upgrade.
If you're not a member, here's the next thing to say:
“Not yet, but I’d be happy to sign up if you can arrange an upgrade”
This is a no lose situation for you.
It's free to sign up for the loyalty program, and you make the front desk agent look good for signing you up.
There's a great chance you will get a free upgrade.
Remember, this is about being nice, smiling and having the right tone of voice.
