I was pretty pissed off when Lifeless Dark dropped from the gig, but shit happens, and you either roll with the punches or go home. As I've gotten older, I love lounging about, and ignoring the fuck out of my phone, so "go home" is pretty sweet option. However, one could become slothy if you go that route far too often, which is why I'm glad I got over my little Lifeless Dark tantrum to see the killer bands who could make it.
My favorite that night was NYC's Tower 7, who took to the stage after the equally killer Church Clothes. An old friend was telling me about when Cerebral Rot was in New York and hit the Anchored Inn after their gig at Vitus (the bar that used to be The Acheron (RIP)). They would end up drinking with Tower 7 and informing their friend; "Duuuuuude check out their band, they're fuuuuucking siiiiick". That is an absolutely ringing endorsement from a very well rounded and musically knowledgeable bunch and good enough for me. (check out my videos from that night back in March).
Lo and behold, they were right; Tower 7 is some fucking sickery. Just as brutal and aggressive as every other great Punk band going strong right now, but they have a lot of aspects that make them unique. When they're not going fast, they get sludgy, and from time to time go for the mid-pace. This makes for a great contrast and separates them from the typical fast "1,2,3,4, 1,2,3,4" Punk bands that are a dime a dozen. There's a little bit of metal in there too, which is always a plus, and riffs well with the slower parts.
On top of that, their bassist has one of the most powerfully dialed in tone I've heard from a Punk band, and that should be the standard for any aggressive music. We need to and should demand to hear that low end in the mix. Their guitarist keeps it interesting with some incredibly creative writing. The drummer matches the string players with the same level of intensity and skill (it's evident from the video the dude is no soft pillow drummer). To round things out, the vocalist's voice meshes perfectly to their sound and rounds it all out. If a member of the living dead wanted to yell at me for cutting him off in traffic, I'd imagine it would sound like the singer of Tower 7, and that to me is ideal.
I'm glad I still went since Nosferatu, Church Clothes, and especially Tower 7, totally made up for the lack of Lifeless Dark (whom I hope reschedules and comes back to the city). I'm proud to say this band is local to our city and should be heard. Please support Tower 7 by seeing them live and/or buying their records.
This is another band with a limited internet presence, so I'll post what I can.
