The Softube Console One Controller review looks at the Softube Console 1 to see if all the buzz about this audio interface and control surface is true.
The Softube Console 1 comes from Swedish developers that have created quite the following for themselves.

They have some impressive collaborations under their belt including working with Native Instruments. This is the companies first attempt at hardware under their own banner. They have some big goals with this model.
The buzz is that the Console 1 will deliver the mixing you get with a large format analog console without having any banks, motorized fader and no DAW control parameters.
Can it be done without sacrificing sound? Let’s find out!
How Does It Work?
The secret is in the Console plugin which is a hybrid of software and hardware. There is a dedicated knob for every single control.
The Console One is based on the SSL4000 E channel strip.
If you are familiar with other Softube products than you already know that Softube has built a reputation for creating emulations of much wanted music technology for the studio.
Does it Work?
The short answer is that it does. Once you have the Console plugin set up it is surprisingly easy to use. This is an intuitive DAW midi controller that has great visuals. For sound engineering it really simplifies things.
Softube has extended the capabilities of the channel strip in small but very noticeable ways that were just not evident with the analog version of the SSL4000E.
For example, you get the high/low pass filter, plus 4 band equalizer making the two mid bands switchable and parametric. You can switch seamlessly between bell, filter modes and shelving.
Additionally, the range has been extended which delivers a nice range of crossover between highs and lows. This is a very useful feature.
You get great sonic characteristics as well. There is a lot that the Console has to offer.
What’s the Bottom Line?
Anyone that has experience working with compressors, mixers and equalizers there is no learning curve with the Console 1.
Setup is simple, it interfaces beautifully, and it delivers a different type of experience. It may take some die-hard fans of the keyboard and mouse a little time to get used to it, but it is well worth the effort.
It allows you to get to and control the channel strip easier than using a mouse and keyboard which is nice.
The fact that it is not a DAW controller gets lost in the shuffle and is easy to forget that you do not have to deal with a mouse and keyboard to get some great sound engineering benefits.
In other words, if Softube’s goal is to convince sound engineers that they do not need a mouse and a keyboard to get the job done, they have reached their goal.
There will be some that will drag their feet and refuse to give up their analog Leviathan, and that is okay too but if you want to clear up some space and have a reliable plugin that can tackle any mixing, editing job this is the plugin for you.
You can even use it as an add on or a super channel to your current setup just as easily.
Assigning value to this technology is difficult as it is a one of a kind type deal.
There are no other plugins on the market that can compare to what the Console 1 has to offer, it is not a DAW, so we could not compare it to the DAW that we are used to.
Ultimately, it is equipment that is worth having because it is not like any other equipment out there.
