Caribou Hunting!!!
What a wild hunt! My caribou obsession runs deep. I zeroed on caribou last year, so I was determined to come home with any bull this year and only had one day to get it done.
We turned up some small bulls at first light (which isn’t until 9:30am) but couldn’t see much for bou. It was SO COLD, I needed to hike to stay warm. I even hiked in puffy pants.
We closed the distance from hill to hill, glassing. I had my bow in case I had an archery stalk opportunity at one. I eventually peeked up over the last hill we could turn them up from and saw a group of 14 bulls 500-700 yards away moving around together in the flat wide open tundra. I saw this big bull, so I threw the bow down to double up with Adam and grabbed the gun.
I shot him at 650 yards. He rolled and popped his antlers off! Adam and I switched spots and he got on the gun and I videoed on the spotter and ranged. He picked a bull at 500 yards and dumped him with one shot. We just doubled on nice caribou bulls!
It was noon, and we only had a few more hours until dark to cut up 2 caribou, go all the way back to camp, pack up camp, and fly everything home by dark.
So he started working on his caribou and I started on mine. We were 200 yards apart. I was eating a snack when I heard Adam run up behind me. “I just heard a wolf howl. Right up there.” I didn’t hear it. Probably because of my loud snacks 😂
We both started howling with our mouths on and off for about 10 minutes. It seemed like a lost cause. I thought he was hearing things.
I saw a big caribou shed behind me so I went to pick it up while Adam stayed on the glass, looking for the mystery wolf. I kept the shed on my head walking in case a wolf did come out. Just then, a wolf flashed through the brush and I dropped to the ground so quick.
This wolf came running into us and stopped at 400 yards. We couldn’t believe our eyes. Adam got on the gun. My hands were so numb, I was barely able to hit the range button on the Revic. Adam made an awesome shot. WOLF DOWN! We were really short on time now. We both cut everything up, & Adam ran back to the plane while I packed to the nearest landing spot. It was a push, but we made it home by sunset!
