Real+True launched a year ago, in September of 2021, with a mission to unlock the beauty and truth of the Catechism of the Catholic Church for a new generation and help men and women discover its pulsating heart: Jesus Christ. We believe the Catechism is not a textbook, a collection of ideas, or a set of rules. It is the faithful echo of a God who wishes to reveal himself to us and desires us to respond. Real+True is a project of Our Sunday Visitor, one of the largest Catholic publishers in the world and a leader in catechetical and evangelization resources. In April, the Dicastery for Evangelization granted Real+True the patronage of the Holy See after having deemed this greatly valuable in the dissemination of the contents of the faith, especially among the younger generations and in a language close to their sensibilities.
Real+True name is a reference to the real and true God. In Jesus, God is real. He is someone, not something. He’s a person who knows us and understands us. He walked this earth and showed us how to live and love. He is also the Truth; his light guides our path and leads us to everlasting life.
We accomplish our mission to pass down the gift of our faith by creating beautiful, captivating, and relevant content inspired by the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The content is available in multiple languages, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and English and is accessible for free to people all over the world.
We have divided the Catechism into 48 units, 12 units for each of the four pillars of the Catechism. We will publish a new unit with videos and social media content about that unit. Next month, in October, we will complete the first 12 units for the first pillar, the Profession of Faith, and in November, we will begin the second pillar, the Sacraments. The first phase of the project will be completed in 2025.
God’s pedagogy, which the Catechism is inspired by, also inspired our approach to creating and structuring content from the Catechism. Catechesis is a moment in the process of evangelization, and its primary aim is to put people into intimacy and communion with Jesus Christ (Catechesi Tradendae Par. 5). The Catechism’s approach and structure are the guiding principles of our project. The Catechism is Christocentric, so the focus and center of Real+True is Jesus. The Catechism is kerygmatic, so Real+True aims to explain doctrine in relation to the gospel message, the Good News. The Catechism has a missionary dimension, so Real+True does not presume faith in those that would read it but seeks to evangelize through its presentation of the faith. And the Catechism is systematic, progressive, and organic, meaning the structure itself is a catechesis. This is the way we create content for Real+True.
Who is Real+True for? We hope these videos will find people curious about what the Church teaches and about Jesus. We pray that our videos rouse a spiritual curiosity about the world and what it means to be human. We pray the videos would present the contents of our faith in a way that is relevant to their lives, perhaps in a way they’ve never heard before. We hope that many dioceses, parishes, schools, and apostolates find these videos to journey with others who are spiritually curious or seeking truth.
Finally, we hope and pray Real + True helps people around the world rediscover the “pulsating heart of the catechism,” as Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa stated in his sermon to the papal household on the Catechism on the Year of Faith, a heart that has a face and a name – Jesus Christ.
