Jens Fänge gives importance to the past even if he is not nostalgic. He regularly recalls his state of mind at different stages of his life. He remembers his childhood drawings, the art he produced at 18, at 30... Often he notices that old drawings, studies or sketches already contain the markers of his style with similarities in paint or color.

Fänge finds his inspiration in several art forms or paintings such as portraiture, landscape, still life and geometric abstraction. Although he feels he is in the tradition of certain artists, Jens Fänge does not refer to them in his paintings. Nevertheless, he delves into the history of art to find what he needs.

In particular, he cites artists such as Kurt Schwitters or Giorgio De Chirico, who each took parallel paths in their painting careers. These artists had radically different artistic phases, sometimes classical, sometimes avant-garde. These inconsistencies in the chronology of these painters' works disturb Jens Fänge as much as they stimulate him creatively.

And indeed, for Jens Fänge, being an artist is a form of resistance, it is going against what is expected. Thus, to make art is "to keep your eyes open for the unexpected because that is where the future lies.
