Number one on the list is the infamous, cultural phenomenon, and gave birth to some pop-culture memes: the Area 51 located in Southern Nevada. Nickname for a remote detachment of United States Air Force facility ‘Edwards Air Force Base’, this place is built up in secrecy. Most conspiracy theorists have long argued that this serves as a testing facility for experimental aircraft and weaponry but the most famous theory amongst is that this is where the U.S. government examines and holds a crashed alien spacecraft and the aliens inside it including pieces of evidence from a supposed alien crash landing that happening in 1947 at Roswell, New Mexico. Area 51 might be a popular destination for alien enthusiasts but is totally closed to everyone except cleared intelligence and military personnel.
Second is Snake Island in Brazil. I bet just by dropping the name anyone would not dare to visit this place. Brazil’s Ilha da Queimada Grande—dubbed and easier to pronounce as Snake Island— is the abode for some of the world’s lethal species of vipers. Claimed to have residents of more than 4,000 snakes, this island is off-limits and a doctor is required if one will be visiting for research. One species of snake living in this 43-hectare island is the Golden Lancehead Viper whose venom is so poisonous it can melt the flesh of a human.
Number three is the reference to the recently made and popular HBO tv series, Chernobyl. Located in Ukraine, Chernobyl was once part of the Soviet Union and the place where the April 1986 nuclear explosion happened. Considered as the worst nuclear accident in history, the casualties caused by radiation is impossible to pin down. 30 years since the awful disaster, experts and the power plant’s director guess the area won’t be open to humans for at least 20,000 years.
The fourth is the heavily protected Vatican Secret Archives housed somewhere in the Vatican. It contains 53 miles of archived documents related to the Catholic Church dating as far back as the 8th century. Some artifacts include a letter from Mary Queen of Scots begging Pope Sixtus V to save her from beheading. The archive was once opened to researchers in 1881, but it isn’t easy to get a pass inside. Researchers who apply for access can only have access for up to three months, and no more than 60 scholars are allowed in at once. Some would say this could be heaven for American author Dan Brown.
Next on the list have been deemed as the most heavily guarded place on planet earth. The Fort Knox Vaults is the home of the United States’ most gold reserves so it makes sense that no single human could enter these vaults. Several combinations of codes that no one knows must be entered to gain access. Even various staff personnel would not be able to enter the vaults without the help of their colleagues. Good luck if you have plans trying to get in.
The Tomb of the Qin Shi Huang in central China houses the tomb of China’s first emperor. Initially discovered by farmers in 1974 and archaeologists have since found about 2,000 clay soldiers, experts also expect that there are another 8,000 still uncovered. The Chinese government has forbidden the archaeologists for further excavating the central tomb where the body of Qin Shi Huang himself lies which has been closed since 210 BCE. Aside from respecting the ancient burial rites, the reason was also from fear of the current excavating technology to damage the ancient artifacts.
Another important vault residing on this planet that no one is allowed to visit is the Svalbard Seed Vault that plunges more than 320 feet into a mountain between Norway and the North Pole. It stores 890,000 preserved seeds to ensure diverse food options when a major catastrophe happens. The vault is believed to withstand both manmade and natural disasters.
Number eight on the list is the North Sentinel Island which is the home of the Sentinelese tribe that is thought to have been there for more than sixty thousand years. The Sentinelese tribe is one of the last communities in the world that is isolated in modern outside societies. Two fishermen whose boat drifted to the shallows of North Sentinel Island in 2006 have been killed by the tribe. In the fear of outsiders being deadly to the tribe because of them not being in contact with the diseases common people have built resistance to, the Indian government has agreed to not make any contact with them.
There is a temple or shrine in Japan that only members of the Imperial Family can enter. Isle Grand Shrine was built for the sun goddess Amaterasu-Omikami, and the inside of it is being rebuilt every 20 years to reflect the idea of rebirth. Located in the town of Uji-tachi in the Mie Prefecture of Japan, this Shinto shrine complex consists of 2 main shrines and 125 secondary shrines. From the outside, little can be seen except a fence and the buildings’ thatched roofs.
