What is a Pepino Melon? Also known as Pepino Dulce, which means "sweet cucumber" in Spanish, this fruit is native to South America, but now grows year round around the world. They are also known as Melon Pear, Melon Shrub, and Pear Melon.
The oval-shaped, smooth-skinned fruit turns from green to yellow as it ripens, then develops striking purple stripes when mature. For a few months each year, you may also find the Purple Pepino, which is long and skinny with a dark purple color.
We call it a melon because it looks and tastes like a melon, but it's actually in the nightshade family, a relative of tomatoes and eggplants.
What does a Pepino Melon taste like? It has a pear-like texture and a mellow pear-vanilla aroma with a subtle cantaloupe-cucumber flavor. What do you do with this mild-flavored fruit? Use it in any recipe that calls for melons, as its mild flavor makes it easy to pair with anything—both sweet and savory. The beautiful skin makes the Pepino a perfect vessel for salads and desserts too!
How to choose a Pepino: Select Pepino with a sweet aroma and no bruises. Ripen at room temperature until the purple streaks become prominent and the fruit is fragrant.
