So I'm walking along dressed all cool on the Fourth of July — a Class of '90 VHHS golf visor, Paw Paw's plaid pants — and this girl walks up to me and she's wearing some sort vintage lunch lady-looking dress type thing and a newsboy cap and she's like 'hey, man want to come see a ska show?' And I'm like, 'um, yeah, duh, The Supertones are playing soon, I'm obviously counting down the hours until this afternoon like everyone else in the world, and aren't you so happy that they invented ska earlier this year?' And she's like, 'naw, man, Five Iron Frenzy... Hi, I'm Jeff."
What? There was another? I interviewed her real quick for my zine just in case she was on the level. Got my friend to snap a Polaroid, because that's what you did when you met a girl. Half an hour later or something, I'm standing there, dressed all cool, camcorder rolling just because it was my first show there, not expecting all that much, mostly there for the scenery. And then those horns kicked in. And I felt like I'd discovered America. Still get chills, true story. The crowd isn't, say, quite as cool as I remember them looking, skanking though they were. But Five Iron Frenzy told me that was OK.
Big moment.
