With high speed traffic and heavy trucks transitioning from the Interstate and coming into town, following the status quo to rebuild Main Street would have torn out the heart and soul of Littleton. Instead New Hampshire Department of Transportation decided to make an investment in the community's future.
The project started out with experiments in narrowing sections of the roadway and adding back in angle parking. Despite some initial public weariness, the experiments got the citizenry passionate about the project, increased design awareness, and built support for change.
The end result was a project that improved traffic flow without sacrificing community character. "Through traffic is important, but it can't be our primary motivation for what we do."
Jason Hoch, Littleton Town Manager
Carol Murray, Commissioner, New Hampshire Department of Transportation
