Notes from Brad on the music:
In this musical offering, imagine verse one of the hymn being sung with the combined voices of all the past and present saints of St. Peter's. Allow verses two and three to serve as meditations on the text. You are being guided by J.S. Bach on a journey to find new meaning, new expression and new emotion emerging from text and tune. For example, in verse two I hear the tune being stretched and embellished as if one is savouring all the nuances of each word. In verse three, the accompaniment in the left hand is constantly falling and rising (right to the lowest C on the keyboard!) and in that gesture I am reminded of how wide and all-knowing is God's understanding of the fears we face. I encourage you to ask the question, "What do I notice?" and be open to what the movement and energy of the music awakens in the imagination. Verse four is a return to community singing: Sing, Pray, Offer, Trust.
