The young boy and the starfish
One morning, an elderly man was walking along the beach when he noticed a young boy picking something off the sand and throwing it into the sea.
As he got closer, the man realized the child was throwing stranded starfish that had been washed up onto the shore back into the waters.
Approaching the boy, the man asked what he was doing.
“I’m saving these starfish that are stranded” replied the boy, “if they stay on the beach they will dry out and die, so I’m putting them back into the sea so that they can live.”
Perplexed, the old man said, “But that’s pointless! There are thousands of starfish stranded all along the shore in this area alone, let alone the entire Beach. It doesn’t matter how many you return to the water, you’ll never make a difference.”
Unfazed, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and tossing it into the waters said, “Well I just made a difference for that one.”
