This is song is about a tragic romance, like the drama. Honestly, the lyrics themselves without knowing the background of the song seems to fit a Goodbye My Princess FMV pretty well: the blood and tears from beyond the Great Wall can mean Xiao Feng's tribe, turning my back on you can mean betraying Xiao Feng etc
But the lyrics are based on something else, which makes their meaning different. I guess when you watch the FMV, forget about the background story and pretend it's related to Goodbye My Princess although it doesn't fit 100% hahaha.
Background lyrics are based on:
A tomb of a general was discovered and the name of a princess and the general was carved on the tombstones. The coffin used was also for two people. But archaeologists only found a set of male bones. On top of that, they realised that the name of the princess carved on the tombstone was also the name of a princess that had been married out into a political marriage in the same time period.
Basically some Chinese netizens believe that the princess loved the general but he chose to prioritise fighting on the battlefield and eventually she had to be married to a different place for a political marriage and gave up her love for him. He could't forget her and regretted his actions.
《Shang Ye》 which she recites is an ancient poem. It's really hard translating ancient poems... i tried...
上邪!
我欲与君相知,
长命无绝衰。
山无陵,
江水为竭,
冬雷震震,
夏雨雪,
天地合,
乃敢与君绝
Oh heaven!
How I long to be close to you,
that our ties will never cease in this long life.
(Until)
the mountains have no peaks,
the river waters run dry,
thunder quakes in winter,
snow rains down in summer,
(and) the sky and earth intersects,
will I dare to severe all ties with you
The 'you' in the poem refers to a male.
上邪 (Shang ye) itself does not really have meaning but it's more like an exclamation/ expression with reference to heaven. Something like Oh heaven!/ Dear heavens! or even Dear God! **I took the liberty to translate the song and poem name a bit differently because as a name I feel like on top of it being an exclamation, it could also be like a message to the heavens.
Basically it's saying that she wants to love him and be with him all her life. Unless a whole list of very rare, if not impossible things happen, she will not give up her love for him.
The last lines in the song are particularly sad when looking at the last lines of the poem. Instead of reciting Shangye in their last meeting, she says 我愿意与君绝 (I am willing to severe all ties with you) even when she said she wouldn't in the poem T^T
