In stirring scenes across the country, schoolchildren, veterans and military top brass stood side-by-side in silent reflection to mark the exact time when allied forces declared an end to fighting with Germany 97 years ago. In Woolwich, Jack Rigby, the son of murdered fusilier Lee Rigby, attended a service with his mother Rebecca (pictured right), where the little boy left a note which read: 'To daddy, me and mummy miss and always love you.' His mother Lyn also attended the service, where she was seen wiping away tears (inset). Meanwhile, private and public commemorations took part across the UK and further afield, including the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. In Glasgow, an Armistice Day service was held in George Square while, in Manchester, stewards and fans paused outside Old Trafford for the silence (bottom right). Elsewhere in London, Chelsea Pensioners observed the two-minute silence at Lloyd's of London, where a remembrance ceremony was held on its trading floor (top left).
