Hello,
Let’s talk about the very famous Obama Portraits and dive right in! When I first heard the portraits were going on tour, I quickly snagged some tickets to see them at LACMA. They were first unveiled back in 2015, and everybody seemed SO excited about the portraits, it was definitely the talk of the town (more like the country). I felt it was the first time there was so much buzz going around about a piece of art, it felt like everybody was invested in the outcome, in some way or another. Well...after all it was and remains a BIG DEAL (regardless if you like the Obamas or not), a lot of firsts were in play: The first Black African American President, The first Black African American First Lady, the first Black African American artists to be commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery’s Presidential Portraits. IMAGINE! The first time our black brothers and sisters were represented by such powerful subjects in the art-world and in a museum setting. I’ll just say: Representation Matters!
