일본 후쿠시마 앞바다 규모 7.3 강진...원전수조 냉각기능 한때 정지
A strong earthquake has hit Japan's northeast coast, near Fukushima where a devastating earthquake and tsunami caused a nuclear disaster 11 years ago.
Japanese authorities say no abnormalities have been detected at nuclear power plants in the area.
Yoon Jung-min reports.
A 7-point-3-magnitude earthquake struck Japan's northeast coast off Fukushima on Wednesday night, near the epicenter of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2011.
The epicenter of Wednesday's earthquake was about 60 kilometers below the sea.
The quake was felt as far away as Tokyo.
Shortly after it hit, an advisory for tsunami waves of up to one meter was issued for parts of Japan's northeastern coast, including Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Thursday morning that four people have been killed and 97 others injured.
There have also been reports of power outages for more than two-million homes.
A high speed train partly derailed, but reports suggest no passengers were injured.
The earthquake struck a matter of days after Fukushima marked the 11th anniversary of the earthquake, tsunami and subsequent nuclear disaster that devastated the region in March 2011.
Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority inspected nuclear power plants in Fukushima and other regions after Wednesday's earthquake... and said it has detected no abnormalities so far.
A fire alarm sounded in one of the reactors at the now-defunct Fukushima Daiichi power plant, but reports say there was no fire.
Japan's NHK said water pumps for spent fuel cooling pools at another power plant in Fukushima were temporarily down, but those returned to operation soon after.
