On May 13, 1980 Senator Ted Kennedy and his wife Joan made a campaign stop in San Diego. He was running against incumbent Jimmy Carter for President. In this clip, he challenges Carter to a debate. He spoke at a reception at the home of former councilwoman Maureen O'Connor and her husband financier Bob Peterson. He told News 8's Gene Cubbison that there had not been competency in dealing effectively with economic challenges and foreign policy.
Kennedy's challenge to Carter was the last time any major candidate opposed an incumbent Democratic president in the primaries, with it being considered one of the major reasons Carter lost the 1980 election, and was the last time any incumbent president lost multiple states to an opponent.
