CHRISTIAN BREAKING NEWS: Ukraine Officially Celebrates Christmas as Public Holiday on Dec. 25 according to Western Calendar for the First Time in 100 Years rather than Jan. 7 under New Law by Breaking with Russian Traditions, Ignoring Russian Orthodox Church, and Distancing Itself from Russia
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law on Friday that moves the official Christmas Day holiday from Jan. 7 to Dec. 25.
The law's explanatory note stated that its purpose is to "abandon the Russian heritage," including "imposing the celebration of Christmas" on Jan. 7.
It noted Ukrainians' "relentless, successful struggle for their identity" as well as "the desire of all Ukrainians to live their lives with their own traditions, holidays," which has been driven by Russia's 17-month-long war against the nation.
Last year, some Ukrainians celebrated Christmas on Dec. 25, symbolizing their severance from Russia, its culture, and religious customs.
The Russian Orthodox Church, which claims jurisdiction over Ukrainian Orthodoxy, and several other Eastern Orthodox churches continue to utilize the Julian calendar.
Christmas comes 13 days later, on Jan. 7, on that calendar than it does on the Gregorian calendar, which is utilized by most churches and secular organizations.
In the 16th century, the Catholic Church became the first to use the contemporary, more astronomically exact Gregorian calendar.
Since then, Protestants and several Orthodox churches have coordinated their calendars to calculate Christmas and Easter.
For years, Ukraine's religious landscape has been fragmented.
In the nation, there are 2 branches of Orthodox Christianity: one affiliated with the Russian church while enjoying extensive autonomy, and the other fully independent of it.
The Orthodox Church of Ukraine, a branch distinct from the Russian church, stated earlier this year that it will adopt the Revised Julian calendar, which observes Christmas on Dec. 25.
Last year, its leadership authorized followers to celebrate the celebration on Dec. 25.
The rival Orthodox Church, which is affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church, has pledged to keep Christmas on Jan. 7.
