Designated by the Missouri Wetland Team as the largest naturally occurring private oxbow wetland in the state, and visited by government officials from as far away as Canada, this well-designed wetland is a “must have” and can only be described as “the very best available today.” A lot of infrastructure is required when you combine over a 1 ½ miles of Grand River frontage and the ability to flood 500 contiguous acres. This includes a massive water control structure made of concrete that is 30' deep with a 34”x100' steel pipe for an outlet. The large 4' circular steel gate control designed to release water from a range of 1" to 34" regardless of weather conditions and it is the only structure of this magnitude on WRP wetlands in Missouri. Other improvements include an impressive 80' well designed to fill five water cells at the same time, roads throughout the entire property for easy access and a channel was developed from the Grand River to flood the timber area on the south and west side. Additional mud bars were constructed to accommodate a larger number of ducks to roost. “The Crossing” is located midway between the Central and the Mississippi Flyway and is a central location for the annual waterfowl migration for nesting, resting, and feeding areas for waterfowl and other wildlife. There are seven wildlife refuges in the area that are managed by the National Wildlife Refuge System and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). Three of the seven are extensively managed and known as the top waterfowl hot spots in Missouri and are host to the largest waterfowl numbers in Missouri during the fall migration. These are Fountain Grove Wildlife Area, Grand Pass Wildlife Area, and Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The Crossing is in direct line of the migrating birds as they move between these three refuges. The neighborhood around The Crossing is comprised of over 23,000 acres of prime farmland, which is protected by the Garden of Eden Levee District. The farms are long time family owned and seldom offered on the open market. The harvested fields have long been the feeding grounds for the annual migration of waterfowl. This further enhances the location of The Crossing for waterfowl as well as whitetail deer. The deer hunting on this property is second to none. The strategically located tower blinds and food plots have enabled hunters to take a number of trophy deer from the Crossing in recent years, the most recent scoring over 197 inches.
