This is a short taken from one of my Intro to Philosophy class sessions at Marist College in 2012, which was focused on the themes of Love, Desire, and Friendship. We were in the first day of three devoted to a classic text on the topic, Plato's Symposium. This short looks briefly at the claim that the young man Phaedrus makes in his speech, the first of the party, namely that Love brings out the best in the lover.
His argument for this, which we can relate to in the present, is that when one is in love with, desires, is infatuated with another person, one values how that loved person views their lover. So the lover will be on their best behavior, in order to make and maintain a good impression.
