Adhesion: Water molecule sticks to the xylem vessel wall
Cohesion: Water molecules stick to each other
1. Water and minerals form a long continuous chain due to adhesion and cohesion
2. Transpiration in leaf causes water to move out from the TOP of the xylem vessel
3. This creates a tension (negative/lower pressure) at the top of the xylem.
4. That tension leads to mass flow as water and minerals from the bottom of the xylem moves upwards.
