A total lunar eclipse was visible across the Americas and most of Europe and western Africa on 27/28 September 2015. It was the first total lunar eclipse visible in Europe for over 4 years, and it also coincided with lunar perigee - the so-called Supermoon. Some people have also called it the Super blood moon eclipse.
During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon passes into the Earth's umbra (or shadow) but goes a copper/red-orange colour due to refracted light through Earth's atmosphere reaching the Moon's surface. The total phase lasted for about 1 hour 12 minutes, and for about an hour either side of totality there is a partial eclipse - where part of the Moon goes very dark, and part is still in direct sunlight.
This video was filmed in the UK, where the eclipse ocurred during the early hours of 28th September - with totality from 03:11-04:23am. It is composed of a series of still frames taken approximately 5 minutes apart and combined into a video sequence. It clearly shows the Earth's shadow passing over the Moon's surface, followed by the totality, and then the Moon leaving the Earth's shadow again.
