Yes you can have too much oil and it can cause catastrophic engine damage, but how much oil is too much? At what point does the level of oil over the dipstick cause problems and issues?

After our previous video explaining the damage that happens from having too much oil, and the massive amount of feedback from people who have suffered from this we thought it prudent to help quantify how much oil is REALLY too much.

We've heard about garages overfilling the oil, owners forgetting to drain the oil and topping up or double fills that happen when you have multiple mechanics working on a car.

There is a big difference between one centimeter over the max level on the dipstick and a couple of inches (10cm) but as all engines are different and sump capacities and engine designs vary it would be handy to understand how the sump and oil pickup works and see inside an engine and witness for ourselves how the crank moves through the oil.

Many are paranoid about going over the dipstick max level, does it matter that much? How much of an overfill of oil can you get away with before damage happens.

We have to accept that all engines are unique, some are more tolerant than others, but looking inside the engine, at the dipstick and the sump we build up a picture of what is going on and where we are most likely to see a problem with too much oil in our engine.

In some cases the wear and tear is accelerated so you might get away with too much engine oil for a while but after a while this will catch up with you. In other cases you'll get rough running, burning oil, oil leaks and vibrations from inside the engine.

Don't ignore any of these symptoms. We show a few engine internals in this video to show the differences in crank clearance and oil pan design, to help you build up a picture of how much oil is too much for your engine.
