Ellie Mental Health and The I Will Project have collaborated on a conversation campaign to stop the stigmas around suicide and start equipping our communities with the information they need to step in, speak up, and save lives. That doesn't mean it's easy. The language that we use in these circumstances can feel stigmatized and consequential. If we can change our language, we can change lives so let’s talk through a few quick tips.
The word "suicide" shouldn't feel difficult to say. In fact, the more that we hide this word in our conversations the more we've erased the reality of those experiencing suicidal thoughts - which just adds to feelings of loneliness. Among other things, it’s okay to talk about education that you’ve received around suicide prevention, to overtly seek help for suicidal thoughts, and to mention that someone you know died by suicide. If you're worried that someone you know may be experiencing thoughts of suicide or self-harm, reach out to them. Tell them that you care about them and that you want to know if they're safe. Ask them if they've had any thoughts about suicide - you're not giving them ideas to self-harm, you're giving them permission to seek help. Listen to their response and offer to call or text the crisis line, 9-8-8, with them or connect with this resource yourself if your loved one is unwilling. Trained crisis counselors will guide you through the rest.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, suicide is the 12th leading cause of death overall in the United States. It’s the 2nd leading cause of death for children ages 10 to 14, and the 3rd leading cause for 15 to 24 year-olds. These statistics won’t change until we do. Suicidal thoughts can improve over time through therapy, but always remember that therapy isn't just there as a response to trauma; regular check-ins with an awesome therapist is a proactive way to develop your humanhood and take ownership of your future.
So remember, this month and always, experiencing a mental health crisis calls for conversations - not for quiet. Suicide is not a secret - call or text 988 24/7/365 and your next conversation could save a life.
