Airedale Terrier:
The Airedale Terrier originated in the 19th century from the Airedale valley in West Yorkshire, England.
They’re a mix of a number of breeds including the Otterhound and the now extinct, English Black and Tan Terrier.
In the early days, they would also often be used in rat hunting competitions held along the banks of the river Aire.
Probably some crosses were made with Irish and bull terriers as well to help create this tough, good-sized hunter.
Ferrets would be sent into rat burrows to flush out the rodents, and the Airedales would then chase them into the river.
The bravery and intelligence of the Airedale was utilized during World War 1, and
They often acted as lookouts, guard dogs, ratters, supply carriers and messengers.
They were also the police’s first choice as a service dog before being replaced by the German shepherd.
The first Airedales arrived in North America in the 1880s, where their skills as a multi-purpose hunting companion were much appreciated.
