2018 Mercedes-Benz C-class Coupe Infotainment Review
Infotainment Rating:
Having a large infotainment display isn’t enough—you’ve got to back it up with slick features and snappy performance. Unfortunately, the C-class’s standard suite of technology falls short of that and requires opening your wallet to get today’s most popular features.
Infotainment Features
Floating above the three delicate metal-ringed air vents in the middle of the C-class’s expensive-looking dashboard is a standard 7.0-inch color display running Mercedes-Benz’s COMAND infotainment software. Controlled by a clickwheel mounted on the center console, the infotainment screen offers access to a variety of functions that allow for customization of the C-class’s features, including its ambient lighting, audio system, and optional in-car fragrance atomizer. Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity is standard, as are two USB ports, while Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot are all optional. Upgrading to the optional 8.4-inch display brings navigation with real-time traffic and weather updates. Notably missing from the C-class’s spec sheet is an auxiliary input jack for the audio system, leaving Bluetooth and USB as the only connections for smart devices. A Burmester premium audio system is optional and fills the C-class’s cabin with 13 speakers, a 590-watt amplifier, and beautiful aluminum speaker grilles.

Infotainment Performance
As much as we like using the COMAND interface, the C-class’s particular setup returned a disappointing 1.3-second menu-to-menu average in our testing. That’s bad enough to earn it a Poor rating from us; rivals such as the BMW 4-series and the Lexus RC delivered much better results.
Test Results: Infotainment Response Time
By recording the infotainment screen while switching between various menus and then analyzing the high-speed video frame by frame, we are able to accurately measure the system’s response time. We rate infotainment response, or latency, on the following scale:
We measure the electrical current that each USB port provides. All USB ports found in a vehicle provide 5.0 volts, per the USB standard. Current, measured in amps, varies and dictates the charge times of devices. The higher the amps, the quicker a device’s charge time. Not all USB devices are created equal. Most modern smartphones can charge at 2.0 amps, while slow or stagnant charging can result from using current at 1.0 amp or lower when the device is in use.
