Researchers measured the percentage of items found to have Coliform on them. Coliform is a rod-shaped bacteria found in water, plants and soil. Rubber ducks were found to have biofilms, or a thin layer of bacteria. A study published in npj Biofilms and Microbiomes found dirty water and pliable plastics to be a perfect breeding ground for bacteria.
