The clothes in my drawers and closet started smelling funky in my new place, and I quickly realized we had a moisture problem. My mom suggested packing some cloth bags full of rice and placing them by my clothes to absorb some of the humidity. She’d been using that trick for years in Lima, Peru, where the average humidity is 83%!! And her rice bags have worked wonders so far! Plus, we added some cinnamon and cloves, so my closet and drawers smell lovely now.
You’ll need:
- A large muslin teabag
- 1 cup of rice (raw)
- 10 cloves
- 4 cinnamon sticks
Rice is great at absorbing moisture (as I’m sure you know if you’re ever tried to revive your phone after dunking it in the toilet…). And the cloves and cinnamon are great at deterring moths. Just add these bags to any boxes, cabinets, drawers, closets, or other spaces that need some humidity control.
