Salve Maria!
The Veni, Sancte Spiritus, popularly renowned as the "Golden Sequence", is the sequence for the Mass of the Solemnity of Pentecost. It is commonly regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of sacred Latin poetry ever written. Its beauty and depth have been praised by many. The words of this poem have even been adapted by great classical composers like William Byrd, W.A. Mozart, etc., for polyphony. However, according to us, the Gregorian chant version — more than any other — keeps the unction and devotion of this traditional Latin Hymn intact.
This traditional Latin hymn has been largely attributed to Pope Innocent III (1161-1216). However there are claims that Stephen Langton (d 1228), Archbishop of Canterbury, could also have penned the lyrics.
Nevertheless, this traditional Gregorian chant to the Holy Spirit is a true treasure and a spiritual masterpiece. We have made the English translation of the Veni Sancte Spiritus available for you in the video, with the Latin words alongside for you to follow along. This version of the Veni Sancte Spiritus was intoned by the International Choir of the Heralds of the Gospel.
