“Rarity Investigates!" BGM from the episode “Rarity Investigates!” of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” (S05E15).
--Overall Comments--
This episode must have had the most style of any MLP episode so far, and what better character to lead it than Rarity! If you didn’t catch it, this episode is a homage to the classic black & white noir films of the early to mid 1900s. From the visuals, to Rarity’s costumes, to the dialogue, to the amazing jazzy music, this was an amazing tribute to a classic film style. Plus, it’s an episode that featured Rarity and Rainbow Dash, two characters who really haven’t gotten an episode just for themselves in the five seasons of the show so far! Not to mention we get another episode (in a row no less) of a character realizing one of their dreams. The entire crew, from the writing, to storyboarding, to voice acting, to animation, right on down to the scoring definitely put a lot of love into this episode, and it shows.
AN IMPORTANT NOTE: During all of the black & white noir scenes, the audio editors have made all audio come out of only the center channel, including the backing music. This means there is no sound in any other channel except a little film scratching sound. The reason for this is to further enhance the old film feel of these scenes (most films of that era were mono, not stereo). HOWEVER, this does mean I CANNOT extract any of the score from these scenes, which are unfortunately the highlight of this episode’s BGM. Only way to get this BGM would be fore William Anderson or Hasbro to release it. THANKFULLY, we got some more awesome jazz noir score over the end credits, which I was able to extract, so that’s better than nothing! You can find that in the track “Rarity Investigates!”.
In homage to this episode, its music, and its inspiration, I have named most of the tracks from it after classic film noir lines or film names! Enjoy.
--Track Specific Comments--
Out of the entire episode, this part probably made me the happiest. It’s always a special time when the BGM takes center stage over the end credits vs the theme song, and I couldn’t have thought of a better episode in which to do it again. It just caps of the amazing feel and style that this episode had in the most perfect way. Plus, we get a clean version of the noir theme used throughout the episode, which seems to be loosely based on the MLP theme in terms of beat and note progression. What a classy end to a fantastic episode. Kudos to William Anderson & crew for putting so much work into making this episode’s score special!
