A new luxury halo-type nameplate from Chery Motors, meet, the new Omoda C5 which recently launched here in Mzansi.
What We Like
- Affordable Pricing (Especially true with its standard kit)
- Striking Design
- Premium Build
What We Don't
- Bit Thirsty on Fuel
- Gear Shifts Take Some Getting Used Too
- Coupe Design Limits Rear Occupant Space
The Drive
The Omoda C5 is incredibly smooth and premium out on the road, it soaks up road undulations well and is powered by a 1.5-litre turbopetrol engine sourced from the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro. Owing to a different state of tune if feels stronger than that implemented in the Tiggo, and does a great job of offering impressive power delivery. I averaged around 10 litres/100km during my mostly urban traffic commuting, which is on the heavier side of economy within this segment of vehicle.
The Luxury
The interior looks and feels premium. I love the implementation of dual large displays in front of the driver and the twin felt-lined charging pads at the centre of the dashboard. Wireless CarPlay, Android Auto, and decent sound make for impressive audiovisuals further enhanced by mood lighting. The seats up-front and fantastic, offering great support, trim, and style, while rear occupants on the larger side can be a bit tighter in terms of space owing to the swooping coupe roof line. The boot luggage load area is acceptable within this class of vehicle. The cabin features several USB A ports and even USB C as well as a ventilated glove box.
The Competition
The Omoda C5 competes with the likes of the stylistic coupe crossovers such as the Opel Mokka and Volkswagen T Roc. It brings its own unique and striking style while offering way more in the way of standard features at its price point. An array of active and passive safety systems feature within the vehicle.
In Conclusion
I have certainly been wow'ed by the Omoda C5 by Chery and can certainly recommend it. It is well-built, striking, feature-packed, and a joy to drive. Finally, it's also backed by the automaker's impressive 5-year/150 000 km warranty, a 5-year/70 000 km service plan, and a first-owner-only 10-year/1 million km engine warranty.
