The incredible but true story of a boy who actually DID live a life like Oliver Twist in 19th Century Victorian London. In this documentary you will hear a genuine account of the life of a Victorian orphan boy that would be a fitting Dickensian character. His story shares many dark and unexpected parallels with that of the fictional Oliver Twist or David Copperfield and, incredibly, our protagonist actually met Charles Dickens later in life.

Charles Dickens’ novel is one of the renowned Victorian author’s most celebrated works of ‘fiction’ - A dystopian tale of an orphan child struggling to survive on the mean streets of 19th Century London. While the story is a satire of life on the bleak streets of the metropolis, it is marked with the grim realism of poverty and misfortune that the working classes and their children, actually did suffer.

Watch the remarkable tale of a boy escaping the torment of destitution on the streets and achieving his redemption that shares many of Dickens’ familiar themes of poverty, crime and punishment; though unlike David Copperfield, for example, it is not a fusion of truth and invention, but rather an actual account of a Victorian orphan’s life. His story is told in Street Life in London, 1877, by John Thompson and Adolphe Smith.
