The European Spallation Source is currently under construction in Lund, Sweden. It is designed to provide world-leading performance, with instruments optimized for the long-pulse time structure of the facility, making full use of the world’s brightest neutron beams for the study of materials ranging from biological systems and soft matter to engineering materials, structural chemistry and magnetism. Ken Andersen gives an overview of the state of the construction project, as well as key design features allowing an unprecedented degree of flexibility and performance both for the initial suite of neutron beam instruments and for future upgrades.
The breadth and diversity of the European user community will be key to enabling this facility to take its place as the regional hub for neutron scattering science. Highlights are given of key science areas which will benefit.
