Recitative is dedicated to the percussionist Morris Lang: the title refers to the Operatic movement where the actor moves the plot forward through speech-like singing, while the string orchestra has little interjections and tremolos. This is captured in Recitative through explosive notes followed by quiet tremolos between the drums. Recitative captures conflict, emotion, and death within the piece, and ends with the death of the protagonist.
