Tuesday, December 1. “The Coventry Carol,” an English Christmas carol from the 16th century. It was traditionally performed in Coventry, England, as part of a mystery play called "The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors.” The composer is unknown. The oldest known written version of the lyrics was by Robert Croo in 1534, and the oldest known melody dates from 1591.
Lyrics:
Lully, lullay, thou little tiny child
Sleep well, lully, lullay
And smile in dreaming, little one
Sleep well, lully, lullay
Oh sisters two, how may we do
For to preserve on this day
This poor youngling of whom we sing
Sleep well, lully, lullay
Herod the king in his raging
Charged he hath this day
His men of might in his own sight
All young children to slay
Then woe is me, poor child, for thee
And ever mourn and say
For thy parting, neither say nor sing
Farewell, lully, lullay
And when the stars fill darkened skies
In their far venture, stay
And smile as dreaming, little one
Farewell, lully, lullay
Lully, lullay, thou little tiny child
Sleep well, lully, lullay
I’m a very amateur pianist. I play for fun. I started uploading a song a day to Facebook on 03-30-2020, to cheer friends who were struggling. The date beside the title is when I put it on Facebook. Your kind comments are appreciated. I’ll keep adding to this channel, as I record new songs.
