Illegal fishing is devastating our ocean and West Africa is at the heart of this crisis. The region has some of the highest levels of illegal fishing in the world, leaving the 6.7 million people who depend directly on fisheries for food and livelihoods at risk.
The solution lies in increased transparency and the collaborative management of fisheries.
Small-scale fishers are best placed to act as custodians of the resources they rely on. Scaling up the capacity of local, environmental defenders, alongside greater transparency across West African waters, will protect precious marine ecosystems for generations to come.
