Here's a bunch of tips on how to fight Vergil as Dante by Suuslas (who is also behind the gameplay shown in the video) without relying on "cheesy cheap" tactics like SDT or Faust:
Pretty linear pattern. His most crazy combos are always the same, actually, you can tell what's coming just from seeing the first attack he initiates. More below.
You can skip the plane phase by dealing a lot of damage quickly enough, the same way you can end the fight without him summoning his doppelganger. Royal Guard helps a lot for that.
Normally he charges up twice during the fight, the first time he does the plane attack, the second time he does a full combo which is:
- Summoned swords around Dante followed by summoned swords above Dante shortly after
- Launcher
- Two helm breakers with summoned swords shooting towards Dante once he lands the second time
- Four Judgment cuts
- Two Rapid Slash (dash attack)
- AoE slash (Judgment end I think)
Just parry him during his rapid slash (it's safe and easy) to interrupt him and cancel his DT.
Some other things to note is that during phase one, if he teleports next to you he'll do his 3 hit combo. If you damage him enough after that, but not enough to trigger phase 2 (DT) he'll do his 5 hit combo next time he TPs next to you. He never does the 5 hit combo during this phase unless he first did the 3 hit one.
Very early during the fight, if you attack him and he blocks, he'll follow up with a helm breaker. If you damage him some, he'll just sidestep instead. The helm breaker is a nice way to get some RG gauge, DT, and also punish him.
The dash of Dance Macabre will always accurately reflect his summoned swords back at him.
The shotgun is your best bet to get rid of the summoned swords circling around him. For those circling around Dante, if you have DSD, just use Four Handed (B/O in swordmaster).
