In 1972, Sameena Merchant family fled Uganda for Canada. Age 7, she recalls the sacrifices her parents made for her and her brother to give them safety and security in a new country. Now, she’s worked as a family doctor for more than 20 years and was nominated for Alberta Family Physician of the Year. She reflects on the opportunities Canada gave her- and what that has meant to her family.
Then and Now highlights a diverse cross-section of refugees who have come to Canada over the years, in search safety, stability and a chance at a better life. Starting from 1956, when Canada accepted its first major wave of refugees, the project uses archived images and family photos to profile refugees from Hungary, Vietnam, Uganda, Somalia, Colombia, Cambodia, Burundi and El Salvador.
