Colonel Harland David Sanders was born on September 9, 1890, in Henryville, Indiana to Wilbur David and Margaret Ann Sanders. He was the first of the three children of his parents. His father, Wilbur, was a farmer who owned an 80-acre farm but when he broke his leg after a fall, he became a butcher in Henryville. Margaret was a strict mother and devout Christian, who continuously counseled her children of "the evils of alcohol, tobacco, gambling, and whistling on Sundays."
Sanders lost his father to hay fever when he was only five. So, his mother took up a job at a tomato canning factory to cater to the family while young Sanders took up the responsibility of cooking for his younger siblings while their mother was away at work for days at a time. At the age of seven, Sanders was reportedly skilled in making bread and vegetables and when he turned 10, he began to work as a farm laborer.
