On Facebook there is a discussion on the Browning Golden Eagle 776 Mics. Seems that no one has factual information (including me) so there is a lot of speculation out there. The speculation on Facebook is all over the place too. What we do know is that the Browning Mark 4 and 4A powered the Mic from the radio, pin 4. I just looked up the schematics right now and just saw something I didn't know. The Mark 4 powers the Mic at pin 4 directly from the PLL +5V line. The Mark 4A uses the +8V line but has a dropping resistor inbetween, R613. Seems to me the 4A design is a much better improvement over the Mark 4. If the Mic on a Mark 4 shorts that PLL +5v line, cancel Christmas, possibly good bye PLL. On the 4A with the 1k dropping resistor, at worst it will pop the resistor and at best, it won't pop anything.
Anyway, what I found on a 2010 post on the net was that the Orange stripe 776 Mic was made for the Mark 4(A) and was powered by the radio and did not need or have a battery. The article also said the Brown stripe 776 Mic was made for the Mark 3 and had a battery as the Mark 3 doesn't provide any Mic power to the Mic. Since I had some 776 Mics, I opened mine up to take a look. I had a bunch of Orange stripes but only 1 Brown stripe. On the inside, at least on mine, they all are exactly the same. Same board, same layout, no battery. Of course my Brown stripe may have been modded but this is what I found in mine.... Orange Stripe and Brown Stripe have no differences.
