Great portraits are not limited to the big studio. Nor do you need to take hundreds of pounds of gear on location to produce high-quality images. Small lights are getting more powerful, feature-packed and affordable all the time. YOU CAN MAKE STUDIO-QUALITY IMAGES with little gear and little space.
Choosing easy-to-use modifiers is a BIG PART of the ANSWER.

SPECIAL TECHNICAL NOTES: People always ask, and it's redundant to put the same info in every lighting video.

• I always use an ISO of 100 when shooting in the studio. When on location with a scene that needs it, I will use ISO's up to 1600.
• In the studio with the Speedlights and small soft boxes, I average 1/2 power max on my MAIN light, resulting in a working aperture of f/6.3 or f/8. In my classic large studio with Photogenic Powerlights and big Larson Soff Boxes, I average f/11. We are usually shooting a bigger scene and perhaps more people.
• I always use the longest focal length possible. All my lenses are L-Series zooms.
• RATIOS: I no longer use meters as my 50 yrs of full time of studio experience avails me better decisions than a device looking to make everything 18% gray. There is a lot of subjectivity in photography. As a rule, I demand Zone System tonality. (You can look it up. See Ansel Adams.) There should be detail in all ranges, highlight through shadow. To that end, these are my recommended "normals" from which you can alter to taste.
CHILDREN: 2:1 (highlight to shadow ratio). BABIES: 1.5:1, WOMEN: 1.5 – 2.5 depending on many things, such as hair color/density, skin tone, desired outcome, MEN/ EXEC 2:1 – 3:1, MEN Dramatic 3:1 – 4:1, GROUPS/FAMILIES (non dramatic) 1:5 – 1:2, GROUPS/ARTISTIC 2:1 – 3.5:1.
• How far off the background are the subjects? 5 – 6' in studio.
• How far away is the camera? Usually, as far as I can get to use the longest lens possible. Exceptions: Having to work more closely with small children.
• How far away are the lights? As close a possible, depending on number of subjects. Generally 30-40" from the light's surface to subject. Everything must be adjusted when the group gets larger, but the same directional look can be maintained.
• Reflectors: There is a video just on that subject. My default is one large white panel.
